Colour Drenching

What is Colour Drenching?

Colour drenching is the method of painting a whole room one colour: the walls, ceilings and woodwork. It gained popularity a few years ago and has been talked about ever since. Why is this trend continuing to grow? Let’s explore the benefits of colour drenching to find out.

It’s Bold

Colour drenching is bold. Gone are the days of the white ceiling. Choosing any colour that isn’t a neutral to colour drench is going to create an impactful space. The scene catches the eye, it creates interest and intrigue. Even though it’s been around for a few years it still feels novel right now too. I think we are so used to the idea of having our walls a different colour to our woodwork and ceilings that this style brings a different edge.

It’s Versatile

This technique is applicable to any room. You can create a luxurious living space with it, a bold bathroom, a calming bedroom, the list goes on. This technique can be used with different colours to create so many different feelings, vibes and it will work in almost any space. I also love that if you don’t want to do the daring bold colours you can still colour drench in a neutral or lighter shade and reap some of the benefits. Yes, it won’t be the impactful statement you get from a rich jewel tone, but it will create a sense of visual ease and calm in any space.

It Elongates a room

The act of colour drenching removes the cut off lines from your walls, ceilings and woodwork, making a room look visually taller and larger. If you have a small space or low ceilings, colour drenching can work well to make the room feel larger than it is. This can work great in new build homes, renowned for only meeting the minimum ceiling height requirements. This is actually one of the main reasons I decided to use so much colour drenching in my own home. The ceiling heights are a meagre 2.3 throughout the house, so this technique has helped to make the space feel a little more spacious.

It’s an accessible trend

This trend is so accessible. You only need a good quality paint to put this in your home so almost anyone can do this. It doesn’t require a high-level skill. You just need some basic knowledge of executing a good paint job on the walls. You can DIY this and paint yourself if you can’t afford to hire someone too. It’s also a minimal investment. The cost of a few tins of paint is nothing compared to other trends that see you having to spend a fortune on tiles or a quirky piece of furniture to apply it to your home. It’s also just as easy to remove as it is to apply to your space, so if you don’t like it, a quick lick of paint will remove any trace of it ever being in your home in the first place. It has a low barrier to entry, both in skillset and in investment of time and money meaning both luxury and budget schemes can make use of the trend.

Some tips for using colour drenching in your home

When choosing the colour for your colour drenching, consider the use of the space and how you want to feel when you are using it. You also want to make sure that you are using a really good quality paint to get the most benefit from this trend. Yes, you can use a budget paint, but they often lack depth and can feel flat on the walls, let alone when using everywhere. If you are going to invest in this trend, try and push the boat out to the highest quality you can afford.
